Aarushi verdict LIVE: Rajesh and Nupur Talwar get life sentence


6:50 pm: Aarushi case does not merit death penalty: Kiran Bedi 

Reacting on the reports that the investigating agency CBI had sought death sentence for the Talwar couple, former IPS officer and social activist Kiran Bedi tweeted her disapproval of the CBI’s request. She said that the case did not merit death penalty. 


6:25 pm: CBI sought death penalty for Talwars: Lawyer 

Speaking to the reporters outside the Ghaziabad court, a lawyer told reporters that the Central Bureau of Investigation had sought death penalty for Rajesh and Nupur Talwar after the guilty verdict was announced. 

The CBI’s prosecutor RK Saini had said the Noida double murder case comes under the "rarest of rare" category as daughter Aarushi and Hemraj were found dead with their throats slit at heir residence in May 2008.

Speaking of the deeply mysterious nature of the Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case, J&K CM Omar Abdullah called it a grassy knoll, which means a hidden plot. Despite the verdict and the sentencing, Omar said that it was difficult to ever know the actual details of the case. 

5:45 pm: Aaushi verdict a ‘travesty of justice’, says Talwars’ family friend 

Slamming the verdict in Aaushi-Hemraj double murder a mockery of justice, the Talwars’ family friend Masooma Jha said: “Travesty of justice, should not have to choose between life sentence and death sentence". 

5:30 pm: 'True kilers must be punished' 


After Talwars were awarded life imprisonment for mudering their own child, Arushi's friend Fiza Jha expressed reget saying that the slain teenager would get justice only when the true killers would be punished. 

"Aarushi will get justice only when her parents find peace and her true killers are punished," she told ANI.

4:40 pm: Talwar couple shifted to Dasna jail 

The distraught couple were immediately taken back to the Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad district after the CBI court sentenced them to life imprisonment on charges of killing their daughter and domestic help in 2008. 

4:15 pm: Life sentence for Talwars 


Special CBI Judge Shyam Lal awards life imprisonment to the Talwar couple for murdering their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj. The duo have been awarded life imprisonment under Section 302, five-year term under Section 201; Rajesh Talwar got one-year jail under Section 203. According to the CBI Counsel, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs 17,000 on Rajesh Talwar and Rs 15,000 fine on Nupur. 

3:37 pm: Sentencing at 4:30 pm 


Special CBI Judge Shyam Lal, who earlier reserved the verdict in the double murder case for 3:30 pm, will now pronounce the judgement at 4:30 pm. 

2:40 pm: Arguments over 

Arguments on sentencing conclude. The CBI seeks death penalty for Talwar couple. Public prosecutor RK Saini said the case comes under the "rarest of rare" category. Counsel for the Talwars, meanwhile, sought leniency from the court. Court to pronounce judgement at 3:30 pm.

12:59 pm: 'CBI hiding facts' 


Nupur Talwar's mother, Lata Chitnis, tells a news channel that her husband's health has gotten worse n the wake of the verdict holding her daughter and Rajesh Talwar guilty of Aarushi-Hemraj's murder. 

Chitnis further accused the CBI of hiding facts and spoiling the case. Why did the CBI give a clean chit to the servants, asks Nupur Talwar's mother. 

My husband fought for country and he expects a fair judgement, adds Chitnis. 

11:00 am: Sentencing after 2 pm 

According to reports, the court will pronounce quantum of sentence on Rajesh and Nupur Talwar after 2 pm today. 

9:30 am: 'Nupur Talwar's BP high, needs three-hour rest' 

Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, who were "inconsolable" after being convicted for the murder of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, had dinner late Monday night, Dasna Jail's Superintendent said on Tuesday. 

Lodged in separate cells amid high security, the Talwar couple had earlier refused to have dinner. 

However, Vireshraj Sharma, superintendent , Dasna Jail, said on Tuesday the couple had dinner at around 11:30 pm on Monday after they were threatened with action. 

The couple neither slept last night nor accepted tea this morning, Sharma added. 

Meanwhile, doctors attending on Nupur Talwar said the dentist's needed three-hour rest in the wake of her high blood pressure. Sharma said she would be taken to court after that. 

8:05 am: Death or life sentence for Talwars? 

A day after holding them guilty of Aarushi-Hemraj's murder, a special CBI court will, Tuesday, likely pronounce the sentence to be handed over to the parents - Rajesh and Nupur Talwar. The maximum punishment is death. 

Saying the Talwars were “freaks” who “became the killer of their own progeny", the court on Monday finally brought the curtains down on over five years of dramatic twists and turns in the sensational Aarushi Talwar whodunit, a crime that had the nation riveted for its intriguing logic. 

The couple - who were well known doctors with a thriving practice - were also convicted for the murder of their domestic help Hemraj. 

The dentist couple have been convicted of killing their 14-year-old daughter Aarushi and 45-year-old domestic help on the intervening night of May 15 and 16, 2008. The Class 9 student was found with her throat slit and head battered in her plush Noida residence. 

The next day, police recovered the body of their domestic help Hemraj from the terrace. 

The Talwars were booked under Sections 302 (murder), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. 

The court also charged Rajesh under Section 203 (misleading the probe). 

The couple was whisked away by police to Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad.
